Inauguré le 13 juin 1937 avec une rencontre amicale face au Torino, le Stade-Vélodrome accueillit l'année suivante des rencontres de la Coupe du Monde 1938 dont la demi-finale entre l'Italie et le Brésil. Le stade resta dans sa configuration d'origine jusqu'en 1970 quand des praticables furent construits sur la piste devant chaque tribune latérale. Pour l'Euro 84, d'autres praticables furent installés derriére les buts. Excepté une (petite) partie de la tribune d'honneur Jean-Bouin le stade fut ensuite complètement reconstruit pour le Mondial 98 devenant avec 60 000 places le plus grand stade de club en France.

The Stade-Vélodrome was opened on 13 June 1937 with a friendly v. Torino. One year later, the venue hosted 1938 World Cup games including the semi-final between Italy and Brazil. The ground remained unchanged until 1970 when temporary stands were erected on the cycling track in front of each side stand. For the 1984 Euro, more temporary stands were built at each end. Apart from a (small) part of the main Jean-Bouin stand, the stadium was completely rebuilt for the 1998 World Cup such becoming the largest club ground in France with 60,000 seats..

Inaugurato il 13 giugno 1937 con un amichevole con il Torino, lo Stade-Vélodrome ospitò un anno dopo delle partite del mondiale del 1938 inclusa la semifinale fra Italia e Brasile. L'impianto non cambiò fino al 1970 quando delle tribune supplementari furono erette sulla pista di ciclismo davanti ad ogni tribuna laterale. Per l'Europeo del 84, altre tribune supplementari furono costruite dietro ogni porta. Eccetto una (piccola) parte della tribuna d'onore Jean-Bouin, l'impianto fu completamente ricostruito per il Mondiale dl 1998 diventando lo stadio più grande di una società in Francia con 60.000 posti.
